Greeley Dermatology can address both cosmetic and health concerns of moles and birthmarks. Most moles and marks are no cause for concern, but if you feel uncomfortable with your mark, our office can evaluate you for laser or surgical removal to leave smooth, even-colored skin in place of raised or dark spots. When we meet patients for skin exams, cosmetic or otherwise, our doctors are always proactive about examining your skin for the signs of a cancerous mole. If one looks even a little suspicious, we can perform a simple outpatient biopsy in our office to catch and confirm any potential early stage skin cancers.
When you come in for annual skin exams, you have nothing to fear, as we’ll monitor skin marks over time and catch any problems before they develop into something serious or life-threatening. For example, the latest in light technology, photodynamic therapy or blue light therapy, is a noninvasive and effective way to treat precancerous skin lesions. The procedure targets actinic keratosis (AK), a rough, scaly spot often found on the scalp or face. Our doctors can perform this routine treatment with minimal hassle for you, which is a much better solution than letting an untreated mole develop into skin cancer.
Common warning signs you need to consult a doctor
Love the skin you’re in—no one else has skin just like you. But stay vigilant in the watch for cancerous developments by looking for these signs. If you notice any of the following, see our dermatologists right away, even if it’s not yet time for your annual exam. It may be no cause for concern, but it’s far easier to have a quick inspection from an experienced doctor than to deal with a serious skin condition down the road.
Call our office for an appointment if you notice that:
- The mole or birthmark is larger than six millimeters.
- The mole or birthmark itches or bleeds.
- There is a rapid change in color, size, shape, or elevation of the mole or birthmark.
- The mole or birthmark exhibits multiple colors (purple, black, brown, blue, or yellow, similar to a bruise).
- The mole or birthmark is asymmetrical.
- The borders of the mole or birthmark are irregular and jagged instead of smooth and continuous.
Put your exam on the calendar
If you live in Greeley, CO, or the surrounding communities on the Western Plains, it’s worth coming into our office once a year for a quick exam to monitor your natural moles and birthmarks for any unusual and unhealthy developments. Early diagnosis of malignant spots and skin cancer can be the difference between easy and effective treatment or a serious battle with cancer that isn’t diagnosed until after it gains traction in your body.
